As solar energy has become more efficient, and more popular, the market for supply and installation has grown dramatically. Whenever there is a boom like this, there is room for low-quality operations to enter the market trying to make a quick buck. We’ve highlighted four factors that we think are critical to making the right decision about where your solar is coming from.

‘Solar in Suits’

Accurate pricing of a new solar and battery system depends on a number of factors, including technical requirements that can only be determined by on-site examination of the switchboard and power meter. This should only be undertaken by a licensed electrician so ensure the person giving the quote is doing so with due diligence. Quotes without an inspection will usually include an allowance for ‘on-site variation’, which can lead to unexpected costs. You wouldn’t get your downlights or power points quoted by a non-electrician, so why would your solar be different?

‘The rebate is ending soon’

The main rebate available to households and small businesses is the Federal Government’s ‘Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme’. It’s not uncommon for buyers to be fooled by salespeople pressuring them into a quick sale by claiming the rebate program is ending.  This is untrue, in-fact there is just a gradual reduction in the available benefit until 2031. It is best to be cautious with retailers making claims that the rebate is ‘ending soon’ as this is potentially misleading.

Watch for Misleading Offers and Claims:

Be cautious of promotional offers that include ‘Free panels’. A common example of this is "14 panels + 4 for free." This offer can be used to create the appearance of added value, when in fact the cost of the extra panels is likely included in the total already. This offer can also be given by a supplier that hasn’t done an on-site inspection prior to installation, to allow them flexibility in case they’ve misquoted.

Experience and Reputation:

Make sure to research and consider the experience and reputation of the solar provider in the industry. Look for a proven track record, positive customer reviews, and certifications. A reputable solar provider will have a solid portfolio of successful installations and satisfied customers.

Choosing the right solar provider is vital for a successful transition to solar energy. You can make an informed decision by considering the following factors; reputation & experience, equipment quality, financing options, installation & maintenance services and misleading offers. Take the time to research, gather multiple quotes, and read customer reviews to find a reputable solar provider that aligns with your needs and values. Embrace solar power and contribute to a sustainable future while enjoying the financial benefits it offers.
